Mentoring Workshop: Skills That Support a Culture of Mentorship

90 minutes

Mentoring can feel like something we’re either naturally good at or is just not our thing.  But it is important to think about mentoring as a relationship, and like so many others, there are skills and behaviors that we can learn to make our relationships stronger.  This workshop will provide an opportunity to discuss and practice tools that have been shown to improve the quality of our mentoring relationships, resulting in better outcomes for mentees and mentors.  We will also discuss how we can create and sustain environments that encourage us to mentor and mentor effectively through cultural change, shared values and commitments, and reward policies. 

Dr. Kimberly Griffin is Dean of the College of Education and Professor of Higher Education, Student Affairs, and International Education Policy at the University of Maryland. She is an educator, researcher, and leader who aims to promote access, equity, and justice in higher education. She is driven by education’s ability to make an impact in schools and communities and has worked throughout her career to maximize the connection between research and practice.  Her most recent scholarship focuses on mentorship and increasing diversity and equity in graduate education and the faculty, and she is co-author of the 3rd edition of On Being a Mentor (with W. Brad Johnson). From 2019 to 2022, she served as the Editor of the Journal of Diversity in Higher Education. For the past five years, she has been named one of the 200 most influential education scholars by Education Week and is a fellow of the American Educational Research Association (AERA) and the Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASH
